Pittsbugh just doesn't feel like Pittsburgh anymore

I just moved back here from San Diego and being in the Marines. I must tell you I'm disappointed. All my friends have are married with children and have moved away. The people here are sooo laid back that nobody seems to be doing anything with their lives. They just seem to be content with where they are in their lives. Maybe I've just been around Marines too long and have to get use to the civillian life again. If anybody want's to meet new friends and chill sometime. I"m really just a laid back kinda girl don't get me wrong I love adventure and physical activities but I really don't go to bars anymore unless there is a rave going on so I can dress all crazy!!!! It's fun... :D

I just got engaged and my fiance is from Pittsburgh. His family is there, and he wants to move home in a year or two. I've lived in California all my life, and I'm used to all that San Francisco has to offer. Am I going to be bored in Pittsburgh? What is the weather like? Are people there really conservative? Heeeeeeelp!

Pittsburgh Is Not Like The Bay Area Because....

1. Everyone smokes everywhere, all the time, except at Eleven. Two of my bestest friends have nasty asthma, and when they come visit me, I'd like to take them some place other than Eleven (an excellent restaurant and bar on top of being non-smoking).

2. People come to a complete stop at an on-ramp when merging onto the freeway. They fucking stop! Right when they should merge, even if nobody is coming, they fucking come to a complete stop!

3. Everything is really cheap. I'm sure that once I'm making Pittsburgh wages, this will no longer be the case. But on Silicon Valley wages.... Damn.

4. The place with the french fries and slaw in the sandwiches actually makes good sandwiches. Ok, this isn't really related to the bay area, I was just surprised that I liked it so much.

5. Didn't see a single H2 the entire week I was in Pittsburgh. Yea!

6. Didn't see a single H1 the entire week I was in Pittsburgh. Boo!

7. Way more twisty roads for riding motorcycles.

8. Can't ride my motorcycle year-round unless I'm insane. Oh wait, I have heated grips and an electric vest, so maybe I *am* insane.

9. Local private school funded by local rich people has nicer architecture, cooler profs and no shopping mall. Oh, and their dead mascot is still cooler than A FUCKING TREE.

10. Monroeville Mall is way, way, way cooler than any mall in the bay area, and you know why.

and I need a job....
I have only been back for two weeks, and I am trying to get reajusted...
I just seek community, warmth, and connection

i'm moving back to pittsburgh in december to try it on for size. i'm going to try it on for size because my family lives there......and i do love the heart of pittsburgh. i would love to connect with some interesting, fun, and open minded people. i love black rock city and hope to find some of that love in the 'burg'. any recommendations on where to go dancing, etc.? i am thinking that lawrenceville or regent square might be cool places to live. also, i have been spoiled by some amazing natural surroundings here. any recommendations on clean waters to swim in during the summertime or to get lost in during other seasons?

thanks...........

Would love to hook up with fellow goth/darkraver/burner/designer types in the area once we start getting unpacked, what's to do over the winter other than hide indoors and play games?

That's right, until last Tuesday, I had spent my 35 years here on the planet having no idea what Spring actually meant. I didn't know what it felt like to be walking down a sunny, completely clear of snow, street and to look down and see little baby flowers popping up out of the dirt. I've been defrosted and it feels amazing! Spring back home in San Francisco is not really different than Fall or Winter or even Summer, but man, here on the E.C. it really does mean something.

Well, it's here, the moment I've been dreading, my first time living with snow! So far so good, I haven't fallen yet, however, I expect many new bruises in the upcoming months. I've been told to go and drive my car around an empty parking lot to get a hang of the feel, how do I get my car to the lot though!?!

Anyone else here experiencing snow for the first time?

Hey people. So, I've been hermitting and just hanging with my new honey, but I've now declared Thursday night as pool night. I'll be at Gooski's in Polish Hill (3117 Brereton Street Polish Hill (Pittsburgh), PA 15219 (412) 681-1658) starting tonight!!! I plan to get there at about 9:30-10:00. It's a pretty cool bar with a great juke box, cheap beers and a pretty mellow crowd. Look for the redhead on the pool table in the back.

How's the move treating you?

Hey everyone, hadn't realized there were new members. Welcome to the movin to pittsburgh tribe. Have any of you moved yet? How's the place treating you? I've been here since May and I have to say that I'm settling in pretty well. I got lucky enough to meet someone pretty quickly and will admit that has made the transition much smoother, however, I like a lot of stuff about this place anyway. I think this is a beautiful city. I love the old buildings, all of the green and the hills, it's like a green, bricky San Francisco in some ways. There are however some things I do not like here. The homophobia and racism is pretty deeply entrenched and my ears hear a lot of things that I would rather they didn't have to. It's difficult for those of us who were hippie kids raised in the most liberal city in the States. There are way too many bugs here too, I come from a place with approx. 10 kinds of bugs that you could expect to run into on any given day. I see at least 3x's that many species here, and the only new ones I don't mind seeing are the fireflies, so it's a bit of a drag. Lastly, I can't stand the humidity or the really hot days. The last few weeks have been great, but everything before that, sheesh, I thought I was going to die. I have to admit that I am also a little afraid of my first winter here as I've never lived in or near snow.

Hope you all are well, please take a moment to tell us all what you like and don't like about your new home!
